The Speech Communication program has a 25-year history of building knowledge and skills in human communication – for one-to one, small group and public speaking activities. In addition to serving our own undergraduate majors and minors, more than twenty departments at the University of Nevada require courses in speech communication for their majors. Our masters program has many graduates who have become successful in a variety of fields ranging from heath care to hospitality industry, and from public relations to community development.
For over 70 years, our award-winning Intercollegiate Debate and Forensics Team has traveled to speech tournaments around the country giving them the opportunity to test their skills against some of the best debaters in the country.
The Theatre program provides opportunities to participate in theatrical classes activities for majors and non-majors. In addition to core curriculum classes, students can receive pre-professional training in preparation to work in theatre in the areas of acting/director or design/technology.
An integral part of the theatre program is the Nevada Repertory Company which produces a wide variety of genres and styles of theatres. Nevada Repertory Company fosters a “company concept” whereby students, faculty, and community volunteers become part of an organized season of coordinated productions.
In 2008, the Theatre program entered into an exciting collaboration with the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival. The collaboration provides opportunities for theatre students to work in internship positions and receive professional level experience in many capacities within the theatre including acting, scenic and set design.
